A Sizable Fraction

This blog turned 3 a few weeks ago, and none of you punks sent it a gift. Yeah yeah, international postage, blah blah blah. At any rate, I've now been writing here for like 3/28.5ths or, uh, 2/19ths (I think) of my life now, and it's been fun. So, thanks for reading and commenting.

Baby Mama - 6.5

I love Tina Fey. I really do. She is funny and self-depricating. She seems nice and down to Earth. She created one of the funniest TV shows in recent memory. She is liberal and her Sarah Palin impression has done more to expose the farce of the Palin candidacy than anyone in the mainstream media. Basically, I'm saying she's dreamy, so the lowest I'm going to give any movie that she writes and directs is about a 6 out of 10. Baby Mama wasn't roll-on-the-floor funny, but it was amusing throughout. Well almost throughout; the wheels kind of fell off in the last half hour or so, but it was still a very like able, very watchable film.

Ignorance was Bliss

It took me 2 months, but I finally just realized that they don't really have Dr. Pepper or Root Beer in Chile, and I'm not happy about it.

I just bought ...

... a knife. It's a nice one since, ahem "the hollow / granton edge creates pockets of air which prevent extra thin or soft slices from sticking to the blade." Mmm, soft slices. So, I am excited.

But Jon has ovaries, so there.

Really?

Watch CBS Videos Online

Just before a vote is cast for McCain/Palin, this video should play along with a reminder that John McCain is 72 years old. Then there should be a simple follow up question: "Are you sure?"

Debate #1 Thoughts

The first debate was a rather boring draw with both candidates doing fine, but neither really shining. Short term, it's good for McCain who had an absoultely dreadful week, and desperately needed something, anything, to move the news cycle away from his crazy flailing regarding the economy and the comically bad Palin interview. Long term, it's probably good for Obama. The path to victory is pretty clear now, and this debate was probably the single biggest hurdle he had to clear. The status quo isn't exciting, but the status quo is an Obama win, which is all I want.

I was listening to NPR and watching Spanish CNN on mute and there was a delay of 10 seconds or so, so I got to both watch and listen independently to some extent. I've seen several sites commenting that Obama looked better tonight, and I agree. Obama was making eye contact and strong hand gestures, while McCain was treating him like Medusa and doing the odd poke-point thing that he has perfected; I keep waiting for him to move it to the next level and adopt the Digger Phelps tielighter. Oh, also, a good way to end this election right now, would be for someone to get soem video of McCain taking off his make-up, it would be like watching them create the crypt keeper in reverse. I swear he looks 10 years older on the campagn trail than he did tonight. He must've been wearing 2 pounds of foundation. At any rate, Obama looked good, presidential even, but I think that the flip side of the coin is that McCain probably won the radio only version. Ignoring content for the moment, McCain's answers were more emotional and direct than Obama. They weren't any better in terms of content, but they often *sounded* better. Obama, while better than he was against HRC, still sounds a bit flat.

The exchange of ideas --- the, you know, debate --- was d-u-l-l. Neither said much of substance on the economy, which reinforces my belief that neither really knows what the hell to do, of course, no one knows what to the hell to do, so it shouldn't be a huge surprise. Obama did well in the Iraq exchange, although I think I am in the minority in disliking the litany of "You were wrong"s that he lobbed at his opponent. McCain did well in the rest of foriegn policy discussion, including the idiotic never-ending argument regarding meeting with foriegn leaders that no one gives a damn about, and in his segment about his "love" for veterans. Still, neither answered the questions in a direct way, and both simply stuck to talking points. Like I said, dull.

I've been lazily posting my political commentary (as it were) as google reader notes, but I'm getting yelled at for being slack on the blog, so I'll try to be better about making new threads here instead. I'm curious to hear what others thought of the debate. Anyone?

Our Dining Kitchen

My Mom has demanded pictures of our living situation, so we piled the prostitutes, drugs and forest animals in to a different corner of the room (we forgot my dirty socks) and took this picture of our first normal dinner in our new apartment.

You’re so white, your vice presidential nominee got the word ‘pale’ in her name!

Now, this is funny, Black Comic Introduces McCain:
Where the baby daddy at? Where he at?
(crowd noise)
You knocked her up, man? That’s cool. That’s cool.
(silence)

...

And you know he got to marry that girl, too. Because … her momma done shot a moose.
(laughter)
She shot a motherfucking moose! Put its head up on the wall and everything. That’s cold, man. That’s like Al Qaeda shit. Post that shit on the Internet as a warning to other moose.
(laughter)
’Cause when a girl’s momma shoot a moose, that’s, like, a red flag for me. I take that shit into consideration. I do! It’s like, ‘Yeah, you fine. No doubt. You real fine. And you got a great personality. And you drunk. But … ain’t your momma the one done shot a moose? I’ll be seeing you later on.’ I practice abstinence with moose-shooting-momma-having bitches.

In The Times

Joanna has a article in the New York Times tomorrow. It is pretty great and absolutely hilarious in an Steve-Carrel oh-my-god-no! kind of way.

On Moving Trucks

When moving to our new apartment, Alexa and I came downstairs with the first armfuls of our stuff and the guys at the front desk in Nana's apartment asked us: Quieran usar la camioneta? We were pretty excited. A "camioneta" is a truck, so we thought we were going to get a ride the 2 blocks to our apartament. As the following pictures demonstrate that is not exactly what happened ...

We're moved in now and we face west, so we get some magnificent sunsets.

Chile 4 - Columbia 0

A few thoughts on last night's drubbing here in Santiago.

- Wow, Columbia sucks. Really, they were pretty terrible. They only had one good chance, and it was on a fluky mishit shot (maybe a deflection) that lofted over the keepers head and required a backsave, and almost got the keeper killed against the post, but they were completely disjointed and couldn't string together more than 3 decent passes.

- Chile was pretty decent, but certainly not world-class. They were actually kind of like the US, very well organized, with good discipline and decent set plays, but not much creativity. The two first-half goals were off of corners. The first was kind of lucky with the ball bouncing around the box a bit before finally going in, but the second, was nice. They reset after the corner was cleared, and had a beautiful through ball back in to the box followed by a nice cross and a goal in to an empty net. The second half goals were both off of absolutely sick long range shots that skipped in on a soaked field from 25+ meters out. The third goal was set up by a guy trapping a botched clear with his arm. I would've loved to see it called off just to see the crowd's reaction.

-The crowd was fun, but not toooooo crazy - it certainly didn't feel dangerous at all. It was a big-ass stadium (50,000?), that was nearly sold out. There was a fair amount of singing and calling the other team gay, but there were no cheerleaders or anything like that so the crowd didn't really coordinate with each other. Definitely more enthusiasm than US sporting events, but not exactly the riotous atmosphere I'd been told to anticipate.

- Some things are universal. There was a big argument a few rows in front of us about whether the drunk kids should be forced to sit down, so everyone behind them could sit. They stood for the whole game.

- Some things aren't universal. The game was decided with the third goal, 5 minutes or so in to the 2nd half, but no one, literally no one, left early. 50,000 people and I didn't see a single Chilean head for the exits. The Columbians took off with about 10 minutes left.

- Some things really aren't universal. The teenager next to us who appeared to be his dad
smoked weed throughout the entire game.

Quick Update

Quick break from radio silence for a bulleted life update:
  • Chile is good. Busy, but good. Alexa and I are about 85% moved in to a new apartment a block and a half from Nana's place. Moving was ... an experience. I'll post a few pictures later.
  • I'm going to the Chile/Columbia world cup qualifying match tonight and I couldn't be more excited.
  • Work has been hectic, but good --- living in Chile certainly has not prevented the 2-day (or more often, 2 hour or 2 minute) deadlines I knew and loved in the states. Oh, I'll officially be a published author sometime next week, so go ahead and re-up your subscriptions to The Lancet ASAP.
  • I'm a week and a half in to Spanish class, and making acceptable progress. I'm still living like the guy from Memento for now, since I can't speak for shit in the past tense, but practicing for 3 hours a day certainly helps you pick up vocabulary quickly.
OK, That's it for now folks. I am mostly internet-less for the moment, but should be back up and running soon and with a faster connection to boot.
